Society and Depression

Rather topical this today, with the mental health charity Mind announcing the results of a report into the wellbeing of those who are on work-based programmes as supported by our beloved government. Unsuprisiningly, the results make for somewhat grim reading for the coalition. 

 

According to Mind, 83% of people they surveyed said using the programme and the government's job centre services had made their mental health worse. Three quarters of those polled said they felt less able to work as a result of being on these schemes, the charity said. At the same time, the schemes were ineffective for people with mental health problems, as only 5% of people had been helped into work, campaigners claimed.

 

I have written previously about my struggles with depression and anxiety - and I can vouch for the above - nothing, I mean nothing is more stressful than the worry of losing your benefits because you're not finding work, due to your head not being in the right place, mentally, nor emotionally.  I had my benefits stopped once, because I had a breakdown which resulted in me not being able to go for work - for a substantial period of time, and it is the closest I have been to being destitute - literally scraping each penny for what little you could get. Now, I had it lucky, I was living at home at the time, and my mother could just about support me, but as we all know - there are people who have nothing, nor anybody to turn to in their time of need - I recall a man calling up LBC just in the past week, saying that he couldn't afford to eat. Just imagine that man suffering from mental health problems - he probably does - even if he doens't realise it - as that is what it does to you - the whole vicious circle keeps on revolving ad infinitum.

 

Poverty, Depression, Alcohol. 

 

Without a doubt the three most destructive elements in society right now - young people are living at home longer as they can not pay the obscene costs of renting - even down here. So there you have the poverty element there - young people don't want to be staying at home, I know I didn't want to! There's the depression part - and finally what do you do when you're depressed? Drink the night away. Bingo.

Jesus Christ, the last few days I have been tagging my music collection like nobody's business - having discovered MusicBrainz Picard for the Mac, which basically searches for metadata based on audio fingerprints and id3 tags - which has been quite revelationary - think Beatport Pro but with bells and whistles on!  It's taking a bit of getting used to - but my god it is worth it - files which i have never been able to get tagge properly before now, all tidied up - which is a very good thing, considering I am now using iTunes to plan my sets and playlists - as I can node them up to Traktor - or for that matter any where else such as Rekordbox.  All in all, a good thing this!

 

I have always been an audiophile - menaing that my music has had to be at 320kbps - or now I'm playing with AAC, at least 256kbps - taking into account the sound system that I'm going to be playing on.  You have many people who think that you should play loseless or WAVE files - but as long as it sounds audibly great - isn't that what matters. 

 

An going to start a few re-edits - of a few classics this evening - taking my point from one of the men behind Groove Armada - Tom Findlay, who's just released a new LateNightTales compilation featuring re-edits of disco classics such as Etume's Juicy Fruit amongst others.  I've done a few before now, such as Todd Terry's remix of Missing by Everything But The Girl - half way through the track, the track seems to go off by half a beat - at the main breakdown - so have had to warp the track, to keep it all in line - and this sort of editing is a good base to get into producing I believe.   

 

Pandering To The Stuck Up

I can't be the only person in the land who thinks that some of the festive adverts for the coming season have got an distintively stuck-up favour to them this year.  The way that advertisers seem to be trying their utmost to crack that ABC1 demographic.  There have been an couple of adverts that have really got my ire this season so far.

 

1. LIDL

Jeees, where is there to start - is it the blatantly middle class mentality of the actors in this advert, the 'smell of skiing' comment reeks of a certain state of superiority, replacing Hertfordshire for Chamonix or Aspen - why not set a Christmas dinner scene in an community centre - instead of a stately home. AAAAAARRRRGGGHHHH.

 

2. House Of Fraser

Now this is pretentious nonsense - they ask models - yes models - who they want to give a early Xmas present to. Makes you want to projectile vomit. It is that vain and empty - and so completely out of touch with reality - you really do wonder who is coming up with these ideas. We all know that advertising agencies are probably the most pompous bunch of muppets out there - and based on this year's seasonal adverts - this just confirms it.

Taking Control

Evening all,

Don't try to picture this but I'm currently in the bath after a day trying to recover from a bout of Diarrhoea which came on late last night - and which caused me to miss work today. Now, you might wonder why on earth I've started out with a medical update when the name of the article is what it is, well that's because up to a few years ago the very idea of taking a sick day was completely alien to me - which although rather noble wouldn't do me any favours at work. In a job where the slightest error can cost the business a fortune - I would be guilty of slight errors when I was not 100% on form and so causing me more hassle than was really necessary in the first place.  Nowadays, I will not risk coming into work if I'm not on form - it's just not worth it. 

When it comes to djing however, it's a completely different ball game!!

The Last Weekend

Good evening,

 

Been a good last couple of days for me. The outlook that I am thinking about does seem to be heading in a different direction than it seemed to be going for the last months and so that's a great thing to be experiencing. There does seem to be a stabilisation in my life which I have been without recently, so I can think a lot more clearly than I have been of late and that is not a bad thing let's be fucking honest about that!

 

Had a brilliant weekend firstly playing at the Secret Garden near Ashford which was and rewarding in my eyes - need to remember to get in contact with the owners of that place as thee does seem to be the likelihood of further work there in the coming weeks and months which would be welcomed!

 

Also had to say au revoir to Semelino and his lovely Jade as they head to South East Asia for the next few months leaving me in charge of the business whilst they are abroad which is something that I am very much looking forward to getting my teeth into!!

 

Well, I'm tired and need to get to bed, so will talk tomorrow!!

I was going to write tonight about some positive thoughts about my life and what I have got to look forward to doing over the coming weeks and months. Alas, I'm angry, but not with friends or family or colleagues but our delightful and pleasant government.

It seems that Call Me Dave has decided to go tow to tow with Farage and try to out-UKIP UKIP, almost in a race to the bottom of the fucking barrel. Glorious...

In what I suspect is a crude and somewhat sadistically calculated move - the government has decided not to continue to support attempts to prevent migrants from being harmed when they try to get into Europe from North Africa.

Human rights organisations have raised fears that more migrants and refugees will die in their attempt to reach Europe from the north African coast. The hard-pressed Italian navy will be left to mount what search-and-rescue operations it can. The new European operation will have only a third of the resources of the Italian operation that is being phased out. The Italian government got some €30m in support for the Mare Nostrum operation ever since the Lampedusa tragedy last year when 500 migrants died trying to get to Europe. That was in one single crossing. ONE.

How can a government basically say that the lives of those who are not born in the West are inferior and less important than those who are. These 'unwanted' economic migrants are people, Dave. They are brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers. They are not shit to be scraped off the bottom of your Kurt Giegers...

In A Rut

Good evening,

Really hard and difficult day at work today. It's really difficult to be working at the moment with so much on my mind and being able to perform and give a service to customers, without any thoughts of negativity and doubt of myself and my abilities. It's also really pissing me off that this is a constant mood right now, without any sign of any light at the end of the tunnel.

I have to be patient with myself and try to give myself a bit more TLC. Difficult for me to be able to do that in such an demanding job but it needs to be done for me to be able to cope right now.

Snapped at my boss at work over the smallest thing which could have escalated but thankfully didn't. People are worried about me right now, strangest thing of all is I'm almost beyond the point of not caring anymore - waiting for the inevitable to happen.

Whether it's a day, a week, a month, a year or a decade - I've convinced myself that I will take my own life - because there is no way that I can continue to cope with the absurd amount of stress that I put myself under on a daily basis - that will scare people, but I've settled myself with that thought, when the time comes - we'd be ready to do what's needed.

It doesn't feel like the beginning of the end, not even close, but the mood is changing in such a way that - that is more disturbing to me than any thoughts I have had of suicide. All people want is a sense of peace.

I'm some what fucking shitfaced after an very heavy night in Das Kapital for the old man's 40th - quite a few stories have come out in the last 24 hours that I'd like to talk about this morning - in particular regarding those cuddly cunts from UKIP - who I have seen in the last day or so been getting all fucking paddy with those equally adorable fuckwits of Britain First - yep that's right children, UKIP are getting friendly with an font of the BNP, EDL and poxy National counting Front. There are pictures resonating from Rochester of these equally undesirable fuckers having selfies and pictures taken with each other.

Now, it's quite possible that these cunts just bumped into each other and thought it would be nice and courteous to exchange pleasantries - but actually having your photo taken with the knuckle dragging super cunts of the right must make people question whether UKIP are wanting to be a party of the people, or are they trying to go down the 1933 route - basically, spread fear and hate amongst an indigenous population against minorities, the persecuted and the vulnerable, play on people's worse fears and prejudices and then whack - before you know it - Farage will be High Chancellor. Unlikely, but still...

Farage has said time and time again that he is the leader of a party which are not the establishment - not funded or influenced by certain interests - but surely that's a crock of shit! The MP they have got in the commons was previously an Tory in the same fucking seat - the cunt that is standing in Rochester and Strood is a Tory turncoat - they have been financed by former Tory donors - shit, they've even had a has-been (or is that, never-been?) DJ, record an dreadful absurd song - in an Jamaican accent. This being the same twat who was so against Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, that he performed a record breaking (that's vinyl, to you kids) ritual of said song on his Radio 1 show in 1984. Bonkers.

Now, you may decide to see this rant as pretty standard for someone like myself - but that is besides the point. This party has openly said that it wants to be different from other political parties, but that is just not possible when you're just the same cunts, with a slightly different hue of shit instead of the Tory blue.

And if you do think that, then you're a fucking twat.

More Questions Than Answers..

Evening all,

Had my second therapy session this evening, think I expressed myself quite well this week instead of being pensive like I had been last week, there are a awful lot of questions that I need to get out of my system. One of which being why am I'm so fucking analytical?

There are a number of reasons I suspect, one of which goes back to the time of the court case regarding the abuse. I had to watch myself being interviewed by the Police on the Isle of Wight after I disclosed that I had been violated by that bastard.  

I remember that day oh so fucking well. It was fucking dreadful! Probably the reason why I hate that 'How Bizarre' tune by OMC - as it was high in the pissing charts back then and my headteacher drove me from Sandown where I had been at the local high school doing science towards my GCSE - we headed to this centre on the outskirts of Newport, the county town of the Island - where we were met by the DC who dealt with such cases for the Hampshire constabulary back then. 

For what seemed like an eternity but was probably only four or five hours, I explained what had happened, piece by excruciating piece - breaking down on numerous occasions as I struggled to contain my emotions, but fuck I'm 14 years old at the time - so much was happening so quickly it was frightening. 

Before I knew it we were at the Police station in Newport town centre, where 

I was examined for any internal injuries, there had definitely been some interference in that area. And then it was done...

Anyway, back to the day of the court case, we watched back the interview from that cold December day and then the defence lawyer got to work on me. He ripped me to shreds, it was like I was a cunting ragdoll for him to play with, abuse almost. 

Two days later, the bastard got off. He's probably dead by now, even if the cunt had got sent down he would have been out in two years if that. It's always a worse sentence for the victims. Not only are you violated, but you're given a life sentence of images, flashbacks and feelings that remind you of those moments. 

And there is fuck all you can do, but bear it. 

The Wider Story About Rochdale...

I must apologise for writing a hell of a lit about my experiences of abuse as a child and the wider issues that have come up as a direct consequence of what happened to me all those years ago. However, one story has come out today which has genuinely angered me. 

The Guardian are reporting today that one of the taxi firms implicated in the recent grooming scandal in Rochdale have got a policy of accepting customers' requests for 'local' drivers. 

Or in other words, White Drivers. 

Race relations have reportedly deteriorated since the scandal came out in 2012 and that was shown by UKIP's showing at the recent Heywood and Middleton by-election - we have to work together to prevent the fascist slime from capitalising on the abuse scandal. 

Those people would do well to remember that Savile, Harris, Clifford and Lee- Travis were all White. 

Sexual abuse does not discriminate on race or religion.

I had a difficult couple of days. I'm not going to digress what has been on my mind, however it's not been music and it's not been work, however I have started to do some studio mixes for one of the bars in town as they wish to cut down on costs right now. 

See unlike London the economy elsewhere in the country is fucked. 

Taking a week off from the booth this weekend as we are heading to London for the Old Man's 40th birthday. Taking in El Clasico, and then heading to XOYO to see the mighty Simian Mobile Disco in action, whilst staying in Swanky Hampsted in one of those cute suites up there! Plenty of Jäger, Sambuca and Vodka will be consumed of course!!

The Weekend's Gone...

Evening,

Been quite a good weekend for me if I'm honest! Hammered Skuba on Friday night with my usual blend of old skool anthems and upfront cuts, and got rave reviews from the punters which is what really matters at the end of the day isn't it. Last night on the other hand didn't happen the way I was expecting! We got a call from the bar about midday on Saturday saying that they didn't want anyone to play there last night. So we went to Skuba to hang out with my boys and played solid House all evening long. Cannot complain with that!!

We take a break from the booth for a few weeks as we're heading to London on Saturday morning for one of the usual suspects' 40th birthday and going to seeing the mighty Simian Mobile Disco at XOXO so that should be entertaining and costly to the liver no doubt!

Talking Aloud

Evening,

Had my first session of therapy this evening which was a serious eye opener, there seems to be a awful lot that myself and the therapist are going to have to get through over the next eight weeks. There's no doubt that we're not going to get to the bottom of my issues however I am somewhat hopeful that we may start to unearth what is causing my anxiety, depression and everything that comes with it and how to combat it.

Am I'm happy that I've started this process, of course we are. There is an aspect that concerns me and that is the realisation of having to face up to the fact that what happened to me cannot be reversed. Simple as that. The therapist said that perhaps CBT therapy may not be the way forward and perhaps more of a psychoanalytical process may be more suitable due to my background. So, it is said that CBT does not take into account the sexual abuse such as I what experienced all those years back, and in some instances it can make the original condition much worse.

Hmmm.

One of the big issues is to stop it controlling my life, and having such a detrimental effect on my way of living. Easy to say I know, but that is the bottom line, it would be such a kick in the googlies to those who've supported me through thick and thin if I decided to finish it off. The abuse ended almost 20 years ago and still it's having an overwhelming influence on my life.

I said to the therapist that the victims of crime always get a life sentence. Regardless of the crime. And it's so true. Criminals who cover their tracks can get off scot free if they are clever, victims have to live with the consequences ad infinitum.

Anyway, enough moping around for one evening!

Thoughts

The old adage that exercise does curb negative thoughts may well be true.  I say that because Monday night I went to the gym for half hour and felt pretty rubbish all of yesterday, went to the gym for a full hour on Sunday and last night and feel much better today and I certainly did on Monday.  So, is it the fact that more exercise does make for a more serene mind than not.  I must admit that when I was in a similar hole some years ago that exercising five times a week for an hour a day did help a lot - but I also think that as I lost weight my confidence grew as a direct consequence so going to the gym was having some definitive results as I could see them physically.

Traktor S8 - Yay or Nay?

I was extremely excited to see the reports of the S8 coming out and now the images are out and the videos have shown what it can do - some thoughts.

No jog wheels. Which makes me think that this is an mashup of Maschine, the F1 and the Mark 2 X1. Is this going to be for those of us who are using the S4 right now, I suspect it isn't. I think it's going to be used predominantly by DJs such as MK who use the above in their sets right now - it'll be interesting to see what is heard at Fabric tonight where Terry Francis and Davide Squillaci have been premiering the S8 to punters.

Would I get it, probably not immediately, I'm going to be needing convincing that the lack of jog wheels is a positive step, several of my fellow DJs down here are of a similar opinion, one of the very essences of DJing is the ability to be able to scratch - and although I can barely do it, it is an ability that cannot be faked by effects or samples.

In Memoriam - Mark Bell

 

Have to report the very sad and untimely passing of LFO's Mark Bell. Bell was one of electronic music true pioneers and was also responsible for Bjork's seminal Homogenic album. He also had an hand in Depeche Mode's 2001 Exciter album.

Condolences go to all of Mark's family and friends at this sad time.

Back Into The Groove..

Evening,

Was back at work this morning, still the same messed up fuck that I was two weeks ago when I left there in an absolute fucking mess and still there is a certain sense of pride that I got through what was a pretty deep and personal crisis. Even then though I was nervous with the reaction from people, If only people knew just how bad things had got. As it was, it was like I had never been away, not a bad thing that. No fuss. Like that. 

Fuck. Is that what my life has become - one of troughs and sheer frustration - sprinkled with Euphoric highs. Don't know whether that is what I'm looking for, fuck I know that's not what I'm wanting right now nor ever. But still could be worse. 

Got an meet up with my DJ boss this evening so better get the gym out of the way before then!

Today should be an historic day for this country, in the Houses of Parliament this evening, the Commons will vote on whether Britain should recognise Palestine as an independent state.

There is no reason at all for the UK not to recognise Palestine.

Evening Fuckwits!

Off back to work tomorrow morning after my time away from there and on the whole it has been needed - as I said last night, I'm due to start my CBT therapy on Wednesday and so there is something that I can look forward to in a way. Of course I'm a bit nervous to see how it's going to work, but what has to be done, needs to be done as I do not want to have to be needing to take any more fucking time off due to this fucking illness.
